Establish authority
Confirm who can commission work and what the estate shareholders have agreed. If authority is unclear, check it with the estate administrator, lawyer or another qualified adviser.
Get a visual overview
Ask for room-by-room photographs, storage areas, visible documents and valuables, and an estimate of the volume.
Use three categories
Keep: photographs, documents, jewellery, keys and sentimental items.
Check: items whose value, ownership or significance is unclear.
Remove: items authorised for removal.
Access and documentation
Keys may be handled through an estate agent, building manager, relative or lawyer. Agree photographs before and after work and a rule for unexpected findings.
